Getting to know Leah Lang, National Manager, Financial Lines
1. How did you find your way into the insurance broking world?
As with a lot of people in my generation, I fell into the insurance industry. I was working for an amazing team in a different role, and they saw potential as a Professional Lines Broker and offered me a vacant Professional Lines Broking position. I haven’t looked back. It has taken me all over the globe and given me so much experience and knowledge.
2. What were you doing before you joined the insurance industry, and what skills were you able to bring with you?
I was straight out of school and didn’t even know what insurance was! I was brought up in a very strong and socially-aware family. As a result, relationship skills have always been a part of my life, which has really helped me understand people and their needs – whether it’s professional or personal.
3. How would you describe what you do for your clients in one sentence?
I help protect clients’ balance sheets and reputation by providing fit-for-purpose policies to assist managing risks our clients face.
4. What types of clients or industries do you typically work with?
Hard-to-place and larger Insureds are my main focus, including Architects, Engineers (including Structural), Certifiers, Investment Funds, and anything in between for Professional indemnity, IT Liability, Management Liability and Cyber Liability, amongst other coverages.
5. What’s one client story or experience that’s really stayed with you?
The most important experiences have always been where Insureds have found it almost impossible to get coverage via other Brokers for a variety of difficult activities. I like nothing more than taking a step back, unpacking a risk and building it back up by working with the Insured and Insurers together to understand each other and making it work for all parties. It’s not always about Premium – it is more about what keeps each party up at night and how to address those issues in a considered manner.
6. What makes Network Insurance House different?
Respect. I have been around a long time and have found NIH has a collaborative approach – with each other, and their clients and Insurers, to ensure support for everyone involved across the whole process – whatever that may look like. Supporting each other by sharing knowledge is key to a good team, and this is the case within NIH.
7. What do you value most about the way we work or support our clients?
In working as a collaborative team, our clients benefit from a well-rounded and measured approach.
8. What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
Knowing and understanding our clients well through our approach, knowing we have assisted to protect their business. In the event of a claim, being confident a risk is placed correctly to ensure policies respond, which in turn relieves our clients’ stress which is involved with those issues.
9. When you’re not at work, where can we find you?
Usually by any body of water relaxing with my family and friends. I have learnt to breathe a bit and take a step back from the more stressful things life can bring. We are all better people when we’re content and allow ourselves a bit of space. Any type of water (and perhaps some nice seafood) makes me smile.
